A Time of Love and Understanding

Connies at Christmas is a special time of year. The Italian Market is bustling with Mexican Music and the special smell of urine, and Old Joe Brown Tartaglia is passing out hip flasks with little bottles of Captain Morgan. On December 9th, All of our friends and family piled in to sing songs, share Christmas memories, and bask in the glow of the incredible Sons of Thunder.

We did the Golden Handshake. My palms were reenacting a sensual encounter from across a crowded room.

The Truth wished for nothing, and got everything they ever needed in their stocking. Notice the bows and garland. We killed it for Christmas.

Our good friend Birdie Busch stopped in and blessed us with some tunes. She's got the prettiest swing this side of the Delaware.

Drummer Joseph Getzani and Andrew Nelson locked into the nasty, while Rumi Kitchen stared into the spirit of Christmas forever-now-ness.

Christmas is such an emotional time for me. I was wrapped with memories, and told of everything from my ex-wife's throwing up on 95N to Providence to lodging a sharpened candy cane in my little bother Bobby's throat.

We also had some very special guests at TABLE $25. "Beaver and Kat", as they only wish to be known for these purposes, were visiting from Wickford, RI. They are active supporters of #OccupyWestWarwick, and came to see us their friend "Janet". I knew them when I was working at Quidnessett Country Club, and they got me a weekly gig at Bovy's Tavern in East Providence.

Release: The Secret Weapon

On October 21st, we had the long awaited release party for our debut album, Love is the Message! It was held in the brilliant up-and-coming venue, Underground Arts, and in addition to the 150 people in attendance, 450 people around the world were watching a live webcast. I could feel their power. We played the entire album, plus many many more. This party went all night... But I've been doing lots of cardio at Sweat South Philly, so no problem...

I sang all the hits.

The Truth made the nasty happen, and everybody new it.

My ex-girlfriend, Vickie Fastlane stopped by for an unexpected visit. I wasn't expecting her, or that she would be expecting herself. It's not mine, by the way. I wonder if I'm sad or not.

We also introduced an very promising, up-and-coming young artist named Marvin. I owed his sister quite a bit of money from when I stayed in her apartment while she was doing her karaoke residency in Japan. It started that we were dating, but then we weren't, and there were some expenses I soon had to cover. Anyway, Marvin is very talented young man, very interested in space travel, and we are talking about producing an EP.

Rumi Kitchen and Kitchen sang an emotional rendition of Cat, Rat, Dog, in response to Occupy West Warwick.

The night was incredible. The Six Lady Dancers even called to arms at the encore, which errupted into a massive dance party. Thank you to Gary Reuben, Mike Thatcher, Mike Cristaldi for all of their hard work. Thanks to the beautiful Kathy Kruger for taking these great photos. See the rest of her photos here!

The Night of the Double Gig

October 28 was a killer night for Johnny and the Sons of Thunder. We started at 10:30 at the killah new venue, Milkboy Philly, sharing the bill with sex goddess and sometimes girlfriend, Miss Martha Graham Cracker. (photos by Kathy Kruger)

We were also blessed to reunite with G, our super funky bass player who moved back to New England last year. The crowd was killer, and about 90% of them had never seen us before. It was an overwhelming success, and Milkboy has already asked us to return. Another date is in the works! Stayed tuned...

After our set, there was no time for a duet with my sweet Martha, or even a drink of Milkboy's famous boy-milk... We gathered up our gear, and blew across town to 21st and Washington, where our good friends The Beserker Residents were throwing their 7th Annual Halloween 'Splosion, where we were a super secret surprise guest. We showed up, set up, and tore it up.
Drummer Joey Getzani had a Swedish chef flavor happening, and I slipped into something more comfortable, my late night pink. We played an even longer set for the party people, adding favorites like "Woman you My woman" and a surprisingly proficient, previously unrehearsed Ghostbusters Theme which I introduced as Riders on the Storm. The miserable weather didn't stop this crowd from having an incredible time... You need us to rock your party? This band is for hire.

These people had the halloween 'sploding all over them...

Ryan Carniaux "Reflections of the Persevering Spirit"

There are great musicians, and then there are great musicians who are really saying something. That is the case with the group of intrepid musicians that circle the orb of trumpeter Ryan Carniaux. Ryan and I played together back in Rhode Island at Quidnessett Country Club. He would bring the house down during my duets with local chantreuse Maria Day, who was responsible for writing the classic Ocean State offical song, "Rhode Island, It's for Me". And although I stiffed him for a significant sum of money at Chan's Eggroll and Jazz Series in Woonsockett, we have remained very good friends to this date.

Ryan has since moved to Koln, Germany where he has toured all over Europe with kinetic genius drummer Samuel Duhsler and lush piano prodigy Mike Roeloffs. He has also become the go to sideman for many of the heavy hitter American players that tour overseas.

Ryan also blessed Love is the Message with his sound, blowing his ass off on both the title track and Fingernail Clipping of the Moon.

Released within the same week as Love is the Message, Ryan has birthed his own child into the world. On October 28, Ryan will release Reflections of a Persevering Spirit. I got a sneak preview, of course. It is a sweeping, moody record that explores the dynamism of human experience. Ryan leads the group from peaceful reverence to volcanic eruption, with emotional depth found in few artists. Now available on iTunes!

#Occupy West Warwick

It has been an incredible 3 weeks of world events. Here in Rhode Island, protestors have taken up residence outside Chipotle on Rt 2, Warwick. It used to be a Bickfords, a fine family restaurant which thrived on the bustling business of major until replaced by Chipotle in 2009. Protestors aren't leaving until their voices are heard, and Bickfords is given another chance to thrive, now that a Trader Joe's was build across Rt 2. Before there was only a Jamiel's shoe world and Papa Gino's, and Strawberry's Records and Tapes had long been run out of business. If you were headed towards the Warwick Mall, it was much easier to stop at Papa Ginos on the right, than cross busy Rt. 2 and turn into Bickfords on the left. Unless you turned around at the light, but then you had to go into the Kids 'R' Us/ Boating World parking lot, which was depressing and a general pain in the rear end.

Anyway, I've spent some time with these people. And they are angry and hurt. But the burrito making team at Chipotles is hurt as well. They are frustrated that the protestors are doing number two in their bathroom, and asking for cups for water, yet filling them up with Orange Slice. They say they have a historic claim to this lot, and it's hard to know who to believe.

I dedicate this song to this conflict. I will also be playing it at our CD Release...

Yesterday we rocked happy hour at Chris' Jazz Cafe to raise money for our dear. friends at Swim Pony Performing Arts, who are bringing their star studded Lady M to the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival this year. Thanks to our many friends who came to hang out and drink.

I am back at Waterfront Studios, doing the final overdubs, mix and master for "Love is the Message". It's great to be back with Rachel and Henry, and by the end of today, we will have finished an amazing album.

Last night we had a an unwanted visitor. A bat had gotten in, and was trying to record up in the sanctuary.

Henry, his wife Tina, and Rachel Alina burst into action. Within seconds, they had a plan of attack. Here is Henry's part of the plan. It involved a swiffer.

Well, Judgement Day came and went. My deepest regret to anyone who euthanized your fish or bunnies in anticipation of the rapture.

I realized that I never posted pictures from the Judgement Day Dance Party. It went beyond our expectations. We were frankly surprised at first by the sheer number of people left behind by the Lord.

This poem is the first part of my second cannon "Things That Are Really Small, But Make A Difference". It is dedicated to the deer tick at the Folk Festival in Chester County that gave me Lyme Disease last June.

Dear Deer Tick,

3 Weeks Until We Record!

On April 18th, I am going to pack the Sons of Thunder into my Ford Taurus, and drive up to Hudson, NY to record my very first record with legendary producer Henry Hirsch (Lenny Kravitz, Madonna).

I can feel the hot breath of my own anticipation, going over songs in my sleep, working on schedules and contracts...

I've also been brushing up on my trumpet, as I am going to be laying down my own horn tracks, alongside bassist Andrew Nelson, who is doubling on trombone and also doing some horn arranging.

We are doing ten or eleven songs, including many of our hit numbers...

James Sugg

There are few artists who really have their finger on the pulse of a generation. James Sugg says that I am one of them.

I first met Sugg when I moved to Philly from Rhode Island. I was looking for someone to accompany me on the accordion. He never called me back, so I invited and fellow Rhode Islander, Deb "Stache" Sorenson, to join me. I tried for a while to pass her off as James Sugg, and I think it worked for a while... This, of course, led to an artistic relationship that lasted until Stache quit last year, outside the Fringe Cabaret at 2:30 a.m.

But I have been able to admire James through all of his successes and awards, especially with my good friends at Pig Island Theatre Company. This resulted in a wonderful song that debuted at the last Lefty Lucy Cabaret in February. James Sugg, this is for you.

Every time we play, people are asking when an album is coming out... Well, I am thrilled to announce that I have finally found a great producer for my very first studio album. On April 18, Rumi Kitchen, the Truth, the Sons of Thunder and I are heading up to Hudson, NY, where we will spend ten days in the studio with legendary producer Henry Hirsch, who has produced all of Lenny Kravitz's albums. He is also responsible for Madonna's "Justify My Love", which stands as one of the great compositions of the late 20th Century. He has also worked with Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson! His next masterpiece, My Album to-be-named, will be out this summer! Stay tuned to the blog for details...

I became connected with Henry as I was working on my own self-produced album, Mystic Ticket, and called my old pal Rachel Russell to see if she would mix it. She now works for Henry, and encouraged me to send my stuff to him. He fell in love with our sound, and with Rachel, will co-produce my record in a studio built in a beautiful old church... Don't worry, the psychedelic odyssey Mystic Ticket will be out next year!

2 Night Stand!!

This weekend's shows at Connie's Ric Rac were simply incredible. The Sons of Thunder were just out of this world... It must have been the full moon, or the incredible blustering wind that swept thru Philly all day Saturday. But the crowd was just wild, and we gave them just what they wanted.

Early on, the program was interrupted by this real pervert named Raymond Charles II, who turned out to be hear just to steal my women.... He did sing a nice little ditty, though...

Martha even showed up! I just knew she would... At first it was extremely awkward, after I was stood up on Valentine's Day.

All was set right later in the evening, with a stirring rendition of my hit song, "Push That Rock"

Johnny at Pig Island

Last week, we blew the lid off of the Trocadero and the Pig Island Theatre Company Benefit. 700 people were witness to the miraculous Sons of Thunder, playing our new hit "hip ship", as long as classics "Sensual (Not Sensual)" and "Love is the Message", complete with a horn section! Here is a peak from backstage.

Martha and I met again, our one year anniversary after we were theatrically wed. I would like to say that it went well, but I'm afraid I would be telling a tale. It turns out we are on the outs again. I was twitting her all night, and tried to reach her backstage. Her dresser and bodyguard, Max, would not let me see her. The only reason I showed up at the benefit was because she didn't show up for the movie night I had planned. I rented "Beaches". I hope to see her at Connie's. Martha, come home.

This November, Rumi Kitchen, Noami Salami, The Truth and I blessed the home of Marj Rosenblum with an intimate acoustic concert. The night was filled with food, music, and stories. A local gypsy fortune teller even came to share the future.

I really pulled through with this emotional version of "Hit it From the Back". As you can tell my arm is in a sling. I sustained a fracture in my elbow.

Here is the story:

In early November, I left my South Philly Apt late at night to play my numbers and maybe get some chocolate milk.

I stopped at the 7-11 at 10th and Snyder, where I saw my old friend Tony, who I knew from St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket. I hadn't seen him in years. I dated his sister Marie, who also moved down here. For years, Antonio had a great gig Dj-ing weddings and other events. His sister used to be a plant at the events to get people moving on the dance floor. Apparently no one would question if she was invited or not. She had a familiar face.

So I was real surprised to see him, and find out that he was still Dj-ing weddings. I'm trying to get into private events myself, and I thought it was surreptitious. He said, of course, everything is do-it-yourself now a days, and you really have to set up your own system, set up the disco balls, have an interweb presence, etc.

He also said it just so happens that Marie had recently married a former DJ, also named Tony, who had come into some remote control dico balls that he was looking to get rid of, and would I be interested? Now, I have been on the market for two disco balls, one for home use, and one to use professionally.

He said I could get two balls for $125, which is a steal, considering Dino's Party store on 9th and Morris wants to charge me $80 for one them, which is bullshit, and they know that.

So I jumped in Antonio's car and we went over to 7th and Shunk, where Marie and Tony were staying with his mother. Tony said the balls were in the basement, and we had their permission to go get them. Apparently we had to into the basement through the bulkhead to get them. Tony was selling them on the sly, because Marie wasn't supposed to know he wasn't still Dj-ing.

Tony asked me to go in by myself, which I thought right away was a bit suspicious. But he had been listening to the rebroadcast of Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane, and I had heard it earlier, so I agreed.

So I open the bulkhead to the basement. It's totally dark, except for the light shining down from the kitchen through the closed basement door. I sneak down, as I as was told not to wake the house, and begin to look around for the disco balls. I can actually see them, reflecting the light from the kitchen. I grab them, and I am about to leave, when I hear some wicked weird sounds coming from upstairs. They are sexual in nature, I think, but I am not certain. It sounds a bit like crying, and chewing. Someone is playing "Back in Black" over and over again. I can't make it out, everything was so confusing, but I couldn't tell if someone was being hurt.

I slowly climbed up the steps of the basement, holding my breath and listening. I hadn't really formed a plan of what to do, I figured I would just wing it. The crying got louder, someone else was screaming what sounded like medical jargon. The ten o'clock news was blaring about healthcare reform. I really couldn't make it out.

Just then the door opened. Marie was dressed in sequens and clown face. She screamed. I screamed, and then fell down the steps. I grabbed the disco balls and ran out to find Antonio gone. I then blacked out.

I am still healing from the incident, two and a half months later. I still don't have full range of motion in my left arm, which the doctor said is ok. Apparently Alan Iverson doesn't have full motion in his shooting arm, and he is a bigger celebrity than I am.

The Trocadero simply wasn't ready for our new hit, "Cocaine Sandwich". But we gave it to them, and sent them out on the hip ship. My duet with Martha seemed to go a bit matrimonial, when I read her my poem with Rumi Kitchen and an entire choir presiding. You can see other photos, taken by John Huber here.

World Cafe 1/20

What a treat it was to return to World Cafe Live downstairs. The Sons of Thunder caught a flame. Rumi Kitchen sent a cosmic echo through the crowd, while The Truth testified in the truest of fashion.

The Six Lady Dancers made their triumphant return to the stage, busting out of The Cocaine Sandwich, our newest single, and a rendition of "Baby I'm a Star".

Vickie Fastlane made an appearance as well, reprising Heart's "Alone".
She stops my heart from beating.

Pig Iron Benefit

On August 19, the people gathered to shower me in the month before the birth of Purr, Pull, Reign.

Downstairs at World Cafe Live, Lefty Lucy's birthplace, it seemed to be the appropriate setting for my maternal send-off.

It was a night for the ages. The Sons of Thunder were in rare form, with the addition of my two back-up singers, The Truth. We had some amazing guests including Tribe of Fools, the always intruding and inherently rude Dickie Fastlane, The Lefty Lucy Dancers, and my big-time crush and living legend, Martha Graham Cracker with her Cabaret.

The sparks were flying between us in our first meeting on stage. I am the meat and potatoes, and she is a spicy, yet fanciful fruit salad. Together we made a delicious meal. More photos to come!

I have recently been spending a lot of time reading in my new car. It helps me clear the mind. Since Bonnie took the Taurus I am leasing an 85 corrola with option to buy. Getting away from the business of our humdrum lives is important for artists. Today I was reading Another Helping of Chicken Soup for the Artist's Soul. I really want to take myself to the next level. To be a star. But I find myself wicked indecisive. You know?

Anyway, I was reading this book and found that Rumi Kitchen, my spiritual adviser, happened to contribute to this particular edition. What he wrote really touched me. I wanted to share with you my online community of friends:

What is art?
by Rumi Kitchen

Art is pretty much whatever anybody says it is, and an artist is similarly anybody who says he is one. This leaves any definition of "artist" and "art" so vague as to be meaningless. Does the act of creation, be it ever so humble or idiosyncratic, suffice to allow one to lift the laurel of "artist" to his brow? Anybody can call himself anything, but the test is whether or not you actually are qualified. A plumber would not dare to call himself a plumber unless he were qualified in the opinion of others to do plumbing, and had experience and credentials to prove it, and actually got paid good money for his work. You can't just call yourself a college professor or medical doctor and expect anyone to take you seriously. You need to have something to back it up. The term "artist," unlike "electrician," or "dog trainer," neither conveys qualification, nor is it specific enough to shed much light on what a person may actually do.

I stopped reading at that point. A policeman informed me that I can't park my car at Target after hours.

June 12 was a beautiful night. The band was happening, the crowd cheered wicked hard, I looked like a million dollars.

June 12 was also the debut of the first song by Mystic Ticket, Rumi Kitchen and my mainstream side project. We played The Rat, The Cat, The Dog, a song dedicated to the man who trained his animals to portray world peace.

The man who trained the rat,

June 12 also featured a surprise appearance by my big time crush Vickie Fastlane, who is absolutely gorgeous. She must have snuck out of the house while Dickie Fastlane was performing his piece "Bluehair" at a local senior center.

It was a riveting performance of "Alone" by Hearts. I could tell that there was desire in her eyes. It make me long for Purr, Pull, Reign where we are discussing a kissing scene with director Adrienne Mackey.

I really can't say too much about our conversation, because I know that my adversary is reading this as we speak. Long story short, she's going to try to make an appearance at Lefty Lucy next friday, if she can get out of the house. I don't like the way Dickie treats her, but she just seems helpless about the whole thing. She needs someone to treat her right. How can I get her alone? Come to the Ric Rac. comes upon the heels of despair. My divorce with Bonnie is still at full throttle. She has been having her lawyer crank call my house, doing perverted versions of my songs, like "Shit it, You're a Hack" and "Fingernail Sticking a Baboon". At first I think it is a fan, and I want to compliment them on at least getting some of the words right. Then I hear Bonnie's cackle in the background. And I know.

You got the Ford Taurus, Bonnie. You got half my butterfly collection. You get to have my sense of joy on the weekends and holidays. Why do you call me drunk at 11:30 in the morning? Don't you know I am sleeping?

Rumi Kitchen, my spiritual adviser (as well as legal representative in this case), has helped me with some breathing techniques for tranquility and harnessing. Also the words of Gary Wilson have been very comforting.
